Long time no see

So, the world keeps on turning whether i blog or not. Its been a crazy busy few months since my last blast of blogging, with a new job to keep me occupied and a girl of epic fantasticness to spend my spare moments with. For those not in the know, by day i work for the behemoth that is Linney Design, part of the ubiquitous Linney Group. You like ma tree? Swaz made it spin. Anyhow, its a huge design agency covering pretty much everything and in the 4 short months ive been there ive been exposed to amazing and wonderful things. I was welcome into the creative team and given my own client to creatively direct, quite a coop for a sprat like me. That client is Monster Energy Drinks, more info on them can be found here. Never a more decent group of people have i met, and im stoked to be joining them at Download festival this coming weekend - nice one guys!

Am i the only one who missed the boat with the Skittles 'Touch' Ad? recently it was announced that it was the most-watched TV/Video spot of 2007!

Here it is..

Most companies would freak out at an agency pitch suggesting that their product be linked to a life of misery - but that’s exactly what happened - the poor, beleagured man with the Midas-Skittles touch - this is totally counter-intuitive to most industry thinking.

Their latest is not quite as good, but still awesome compared to most.
It’s called “Piñata”...

Ernst Haeckel and his assistant Nicolaus von Miclucho-Maclay, photographed in the Canary Islands in 1866

Today i stumbled across the outstanding work of Ernst Haeckel.. an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist. Ernst Haeckel discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including phylum, phylogeny, ecology and the kingdom Protista. Busy man!

The published artwork of Haeckel includes over 100 detailed, multi-colour illustrations of animals and sea creatures: - Kunstformen der Natur "Artforms of Nature"

"Haeckel's literary output was extensive, working as a professor at the University of Jena for 47 years, and even at the time of the celebration of his sixtieth birthday at Jena in 1894, Haeckel had produced 42 works with nearly 13,000 pages, besides numerous scientific memoirs and illustrations."

I often used to wonder who read blogs, let alone who wrote them.. now i find myself doing both i love it, constantly inspired and up to date with the goings on of the creative world (well at least that that makes it online) Here is a graph showing the traffic of this modest blog... Ive never had lofty expectations for it, infact the idea that someone wants to see what ive posted is quite odd - but very heartwarming. Invisible Creature is the bomb. Seriously people, they have consistently kicked out some of my favourite design work for years - under various guises and in varied places (Asterisk Studio etc) Ryan and Don Clark (brothers, not lovers) who form the 'Creature also play in a band called Demon Hunter. More info on the band here Ryan somehow also manages to squeeze in Art Directing the Tooth & Nail family. Busy busy boys.

"Croatian creative agency Bruketa & Zinić have designed an annual report for food company Podravka that has to be baked in an oven before it can be read.

Called Well Done, the report features blank pages printed with thermo-reactive ink that, after being wrapped in foil and cooked for 25 minutes, reveal text and images.

If you are not precise, the booklet will burn, just as any overcooked meal. If you have successfully baked your sample of the annual report, the empty pages will become filled with text, and the illustrations with empty plates filled with food."

Covers is dedicated to the appreciation of book cover design. They update several times a week and i visit daily, to have my say.. Save for the occasional guest editor, the blog there is updated and maintained by Fwis, a design firm based out of Brooklyn, NY and Portland, OR.

They have an annual post on the current state of bookshelves - quite apt really for a book cover design blog - and this years is a real treat. Tell me you don't want a Quad? "Asymmetry in perfect balance!"

while checking out some of these shelves my attention was grabbed by this little beautie - Heat Wave Radiator Designer: Joris Laarman, Price: US$11,119.00 (!) yeah i think that price is correct... ahem.. well its good to have dreams!

FORT MAJOR

FORT DUNLOP is an interesting building with a great story behind it.. I drive past it to and from my girlfriends house on the M6 and my eye always is caught by the beautifully spaced lettering (illuminated at night) that was added to the building in 2006. Since Urban Splash got hold of the place its become quite the living space, before which it seems its primary function was to be the largest advertisement hoarding in the world. more info here.

The record is a collaboration with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and has been released independently in the donation-suggested format popularized by Radiohead.

Unlike Radiohead however, Saul's album is being made available in very high quality formats from 192kbps-encoded MP3 to CD quality FLAC "lossless" format files.

Hit The Beach!

Last night i drove to Leeds with my friend Ben to see some bands play.. The Common Place (venue) is a autonomous, radical social centre (apparently) comprising of vegan cafe, diy venue, cinema etc.. 4 bands gave it there all to the tiny crowd (comprising mostly of the other bands plus a few friends) and a jolly time was had by all. I took the opportunity to play around with some simple long exposure and colour bias settings on my digital, the results of which can be found here. I also got to rock my new Hit the Beach tee (as above), designed by HorseBites Design honcho Richard Minino - you can also check him out on myspace

Who doesnt like cowboys? I flipping love them. Billy the Kid (specifically the 1980's emilio estavez incarnation) was a huge hero of mine - and so i love most ephemera associated with the wild west. This book missing its dust jacket appealed initially because of the beautiful debossed cover, but inside i found some awesome accidental overprinted pages..

Its good to get away from it all for a while.. turn off the computer, put away the laptop, close your favourite program - and hit the outdoors. Obv i still think taking a camera is a good idea :D and maybe even an ipod.. and of course dont forget your phone.. but amidst all the irony and double standards, see something new. I took a trip in the limited sunshine on thursday with a good friend and saw so many amazing creatures i felt totally inspired by nature. You can check out some of the photos from the trip here

This critter was my definate favourite find of the day - he let us watch him sunning himself and stretching (looked like he was reaching for us) and then came down to our level for a bit of a frolic. We stood for a good 20 minutes in silence just admiring.

A delightfully comic yarn by a master story teller, Whisky Galore tracks the effects of a whisky shortage, and then a whisky surplus, on the fictional islands of Great and Little Todday, in the Scottish Hebrides, during World War II. The concept of these devices evolved from the 1920s when Buck Rogers, science fiction comic strip hero, used a rocket pack for travel (incidentally in the Amazing Stories publications..)

How cool are these things?! seriously. My first memory of a rocket pack was watching the 1965 the James Bond movie Thunderball featuring Bond (played by Sean Connery) attending a funeral of an agent of the mysterious organization SPECTRE in a French Chateau. The SPECTRE agent is alive and dressed as his own widow. Bond liquidates the enemy, then flees to the roof and flies away using the previously hidden rocket pack.

So if anyone is stuck for what to get me for Christmas this year, look no futher..

Whatevers - Asda have produced these travesties of confectionary, attempting a streetwise update of the much beloved classic

Asda sweet buyer James Davies explained: "We thought it was time to update this old favourite. With sayings from characters in shows such as Little Britain and the Catherine Tate Show providing us with more and more contemporary slang, we thought we needed to reflect this."

Lovers of the English language will be delighted to learn that - for their 24p a packet - they will also be entertained by gems including "Bovvered", "As if", "Respect" and "Minger".

Whatevers are actually manufactured by Swizzels at its Matlock factory, and they own its copyright. Apparently, it's the only outfit with a machine capable of doing the embossed messages... shame on them!

Wally Yachts is a maritime design and manufacture company based in Monte Carlo, Monaco. It was started up by the wealthy Italian businessman Luca Bassani in 1994 and has produced an impressive range of upper market sail yachts and more recently motor yachts, the most noteworthy being the truly unique 118 WallyPower.
The 118 WallyPower is the sleek yacht featured in the pretty poor movie "The Island," starring Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor. My boy Bertie showed me this boat a while ago and i instantly was blown away.. check it out!

Punk-rock-super-group is a moniker thrown around all too easily these days.. but this one i have high hopes for!
Current and former members of Rise Against, Ignite, Reach the Sky, Spark of Life have come together in a new project called Last Of The Believers. The band draws from the hardcore influences of their previous endeavors with a more melodic style of vocals and choruses. Featuring vocalist Steve Jennings, guitarist/vocalist Chris Chasse, bassist, Brett Rasmussen, guitarist Nik Piscitello and drummer Phillip Lee, the Los Angeles based group promises to have demos available soon.

Avant Garde was a magazine notable for graphic and logogram design by Herb Lubalin.

Dry transfer is a term used to describe decals which can be applied without the use of water or other solvent. Sometimes they are called rub-ons or rubdowns due to the method of application.

In writing and typography a ligature occurs where two or more letter-forms are joined as a single glyph. Ligatures usually replace two sequential characters sharing common components, and are part of a more general class of glyphs called "contextual forms" where the specific shape of a letter depends on context such as surrounding letters or proximity to the end of a line.

Found these awesome Avant Garde ligatures in amongst my letraset, scanned then in and managed to use them for a project. I flipping love ligatures..

Anyhow, i saw this badge and after buying it and wearing it for a while i got to thinking about it a lot (maybe too much) - who got the badge for coming third, and what for? - is it a sign for losing or almost winning? - worn with pride or shame? Either way, it rules.

MODOK

In 2006, a "Build-A-Figure" toy was produced by Toy Biz for Wave 15 of their Marvel Legends toyline. This toy required you to buy all the figures in the wave with each figure coming with a piece of the MODOK toy. The pieces would snap together to make the figure complete.
MODOK is a fictional character, a supervillain in the Marvel Comics universe. His name is an acronym for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. The original MODOK first appeared in Tales of Suspense #94 (October 1967), which was written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby.

In addition to extraordinary intelligence, MODOK has great psionic powers that enable him to mentally control large groups of people (provided they are weak minded), and with the assistance of his armor/flying platform he can use his psionic powers to fire a mind-beam. He is able to operate machinery such as his flying platform/armor with his thoughts alone.
MODOK has also designed a large number of sophisticated weapons, vehicles, computers, androids, and telescoping limbs for his armor. He even has a giant android body that is proportionally sized for his head. His armor/flying platform is designed based on magnetism. He has developed machinery that allows him to turn himself into data and "e-mail" himself to anywhere on Earth.
Despite MODOK's great powers, his effectiveness is greatly hampered by emotional instability and immaturity, sometimes to the point of making rash and dangerous decisions that belie his great intellect.

Ecoloqo!

Jeremy Tridgell, he's loco! He's only gone and set up an awesome website called ecoloqo. This is a social bookmarking site that works visually and collects views of the best looking and most useful sustainability websites. The aim is to explore how sustainability is represented on the web and examine and discuss webdesign for sustainability.
It is for all in design and those interested in sustainability and the web.
It has three basic views:
- a tagcloud of subjects that users have tagged their sites with
- the tagged collections of visual cues or cropped elements that give us thumbnail views of the sustainable web, and
- the access to the individual sites with a chance to vote upon, comment on as well as view the site live.

Im not much of a one for webdesign, but I really like the interface.
